Slavic Settlement in Povardarje (FYROM) Reviewed: History, Ethnology and Modern Politics Print

This article presents a brief outline of Slavic settlement on the territory of modern-day Povardarje – Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). The current state of knowledge about the transformation of the ethnic character of this region in the Middle Ages shall be restated. While summarizations of known historical events-or set of events, as is the case here, taking place from 6th to 7th century CE-are useful as orientation points within the body of historiography, concise narrative of this event is particularly necessary due to the confusion created by the adherents of Pseudomacedonian propaganda, both in FYROM and abroad. An atmosphere of denouncement and rejection of the Slavic ethnic aspect engulfed the general “Macedonian” population of FYROM.

Motivated by impressive propagandist  efforts based on ignorance, low self-esteem and a desire to impose an exclusive, pure “Macedonian” ethnogenetic theory for political purposes bordering on fraud, the propagandist managed to add to the identity-crisis among Slavs of FYROM. Also, the indolence of the organized scholars in FYROM deserves criticism: while they are competent to uphold the factual, documents based state of knowledge regarding the problem of early Slavs in the Balkans, not much has been done with the much needed upgrade of the theoretical base.

FYROM fascism in action Print

The new provocative measures undertaken by the regime of Nikola Gruevski show that the political leadership of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia decided to create a virtual reality as a substitute for normal free life of its citizens. The Prime Minister of the small Balkan nation, termed “the immortal and eternal shepherd and leader of his people” by the state TV continued the policy of historical revisionism carried through occult usurpation of the space much to the disbelief and revolt among outside observers which slowly but steadily begun to understand its eerie monstrosity.

Since its separation from Yugoslavia in 1991, FYROM struggled with its troubled past originating from the ideology of separate “Macedonian” nation formulated by the Bulgarian VMRO, later by Communist Internationale in 1934 and implemented on its soil from 1944 onwards by Yugoslav Communist dictator Josip Broz “Tito”.

While there is a convergence in the global Balkanology-oriented historiography that prior to 1944 most of FYROMian so-called “Macedonian” population was ethnically Bulgarian, energetic Titoist policy of allocating large funds to creation of schools, media outlets, institutions, museums and other cultural institution among the hitherto extremely backward people managed to instill a strong sense of one’s “Macedonian” ethnicity, neither Bulgarian, nor Serb and categorically as well as diametrically opposed to any other interpretation of local culture and politics. After 60 years of such totalitarian “national-communist” model which is continued today in altered form by the ruling “Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization” (VMRO), this view escalated into widespread belief among the general public that the Pseudomacedonian ethnic group has its direct ancestry from Ancient Macedonians, a Greek entity bulk of which historically inhabited modern-day northern Greek province of Macedonia.

- Mr Gligorijevic, your positions regarding the Name Dispute are more or less known to the Greek public, positions which we believe contribute to the prosperity of the Balkan peoples. A prosperity which, in my opinion, is particularly needed by those within the «lower» income strata, and which, in order to be realized, requires without a doubt, a peaceful coexistence.  From a first reading of your CV, what struck me was a certain «point», which I also find very useful to begin the interview with.  You said that your father is of Serbian origin and that your mother is from Florina with Bulgarian roots. So, let me start with the following question: As far as you can recall, did your origin make you feel proud and comfortable with it or did you regard it as a disadvantage back when you were a child? Are there any relevant events you would like to share with us? You probably owe a lot to your parents, like the rest of us do of course. Would you like to tell us what is the thing that impresses you most about them?

First of all, allow me to thank you for the opportunity of presenting my view on the entire set of recent affairs, in context about the facts of who I am, what I do and what my motives are.

Your question, the one of "origin" and my "identity" is a combination not only of private (thus immutable) set of circumstances, but also of  broader patterns of culture coupled with some basic axioms of prepubescent and adolescent psychological development, scientifically based affairs which hold truth to some extent in my case.

It is sufficient to say that, in terms of in-depth analysis, not rarely coupled with their expansion in terms of how much they were part of my analytical mind, the contemplation of the "Macedonian issue",  in its embryonic form, did not start until I was about 14 years old. Prior to that, apart from the entire wholesomeness of my life, most of it was by far "secular" in terms of what would in the long run show as my articulated activism, maturation of my "political being", many factors collided with shaping that factor in a stricter sense.

(Quasiscientists Antiquize the Nation, Globus)

Vojislav Sarakinski, historian: "quasi-scientific works are written with political, even politicant goals"

Vojislav Sarakinski (1975) is employed at the Institute for History at the Philosophic Faculty, holding and in this very moment practicing the term exercises on subjects History of Ancient Macedonians prior to 323 BC, History of Ancient Macedonians 323 BC -313 CE, History of the Ancient East, History of Ancient Greece and History of Ancient Rome for the groups History and Classical Studies.

Performance of teaching on the subject History of Ancient Macedonians, History of Ancient Age 1 and History of the Ancient Age 2 for the groups History with archivistics and Archeology under mentorship of Prof. Dr. Nade Proeva. M.A. Sarakinski, several years ago resisted Professors Boševski and Tentov from the Electrotechnical Faculty, which decided to get into the act of deciphering of ancient letters and languages. They provided "exegesis" of the mid-part of the text at the Rosetta Stone and proclaimed it as a Paleomacedonian. So, it would seem, everything started...

Arrest of Mr. Vasil Gligorov (aka Vasilije Gligorijevic) by FYROM Print

URGENT: YOUR IMMEDIATE ATTENTION & ACTION IS REQUIRED.

July 9, 2009

To:

The EU Parliament,
UN Missions,
Human Rights Agencies,
World Media,
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton,
Hellenic Foreign Minister Dora Bakogianni,
& the Hellenic Parliament

On January 29, 2009 we brought to your attention the arrest on January 28, 2009 of Mr. Vasil Gligorov (aka Vasko Gligorijevic) in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (the FYROM) after police charged into Mr. Gligorov's apartment where they arrested him purportedly because of his activist actions. Mr. Gligorov, a university graduate in history, has devoted his efforts at improving Slavic-Greek friendship through the advancement of historiographic and anthropological scholarship about Southern Slavs in the Balkans and Greeks as well as the various aspects of their mutual cultural and political relations. He is a strong critic of the extreme nationalistic narrative of "Makedonism" in FYROM and one of the leading members of the Slavic Philhellenic Network.

At that time, Mr. Gligorov was imprisoned in a "mental institution" where he was subjected to physical and mental torture and came close to death. He was subsequently released after strenuous objections from the international community.

Stephen Miller's Interview for FYROMian Weekly "Globus" Print

by Vasko Gligorijević
WGN's correspondent in Skoplje, FYROM

This is the entire article about Prof. Miller and the wider "Macedonia Evidence" initiative which includes his interview.

The title is: "Зошто светската наука не ја разбира Македонија" ["Why the Global Science Does Not Understand Macedonia"], Globus, № 114, 23-VI-2009

The prologue by Siniša Stanković gives an introduction to the letter to President Obama, but a greater emphasis is put on the reaction of marginal authors and groups from Canada and Australia, including Bill Nikolov's MMHRI and writings of the autodidact Risto Stefov about the "artificial character of modern Greek nation" and the "anti-Macedonian pogrom by Athens in XXth century".
