WW II Veteran and Former Hellenic Government Minister
The Allies on May 9, 2010 celebrated, as they do every year their Victory and the end of WW II in Europe in 1945. Particularly extensive celebrations to mark the 65th such anniversary took place this year in Moscow, in the presence of Heads of States, with parades of allied armies, and with special solemnity. In the Axis defeat in Europe, Greece contributed significantly. This fact has been ever since very much neglected, although at that time it was admitted openly by leading personalities of WW II.
In 1942, Moscow’s radio station broadcasted to Greece, during the anniversary of the entry of the German troops in Athens: "Unarmed you fought and won fully armed military hordes. You struggled small vs. big, and you prevailed. It could not be any other way, because you are Greek. Due to your prolonged resistance, Russia gained time to prepare to defend itself. We Thank you”.
Ancient Greece has influenced the western world in a variety of aspects, but the most important element of our modern society, Democracy, was the key element to American Independence. In a speech delivered at the White House on March 9th, President Obama described that influence.
“And so it was that the democratic example of a small group of city states more than 2,000 years ago could inspire the founding generation of this country, that led one early American to imagine that “the days of Greece may be revived in the woods of America.”
“It’s the sense of nobility and morality written in the pages of those timeless Greek texts, which have instructed students — and tormented them — down the ages, in every corner of the world.”
Vardar Macedonia, the latest proposal of Mathew Nimetz, the UN mediator on the name dispute between the FYROM and Greece, is the most suitable name for the Albanians because it can be decoded only in the Albanian language. (!) Also, the names of Macedonia and of the Vardar River have a meaning only in the Albanian language. (!!)
Historian Skender Asani, showing documentary evidence, said that the term, Macedonia, was a geographic, not an ethnic term."The name, Macedonia, can be deciphered only with the Albanian alphabet and the term 'Vardar Macedonia' is an old term and this is evident from many documents and other sources from the antiquity," Asani said. He explained that, according to the great German scholar, Han, the term Macedonia has its origin from the Illyrian word, "e matja," which means large.
The ancient Macedonians followed Alexander all the way to India and assisted him to build his empire which survived -divided into smaller ones- for three centuries after his death (in 323 B.C.) These three post-Alexander centuries are called by scholars as the German Droysen, Hellenistic Era, to distinguish it from the Greek classical period.
Excavations of archeological sites in Asia, from Syria all the way to Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and India, bring recently to light the post-Alexander world.
As reported by ancient historians and proved now by the archeologists, the Hellenistic era is characterized by "the spread of the Greek civilization to the Orient", as Tarn said, achieved by the Macedonian successors of Alexander and resulting from two main factors: the many Greek cities built by Alexander and his successors and the ecumenism of the Greek language. What was the force that propelled it?
In an effort to make known to the world the superiority and uniqueness of the “Macedonian” race, the Vice President of the World Macedonian Congress, Mr. Niche Dimovski produced a very interesting documentary, the “Macedonian” Prayer. Although it is a racist documentary bringing God onto Skopje’s side regarding the country’s name discord with Greece, we must admit that it is entertaining.
One wonders how educated people could stoop so low. Due to the fact that many people from the FYROM expressly disapproved of the “Macedonian” Prayer as stupid, this short but informative article has to be restricted only to those who believe in the claims of the prayer and for what stands.
I must say that it is also interesting that the same people who believe in the message of the “Macedonian” Prayer are those who financed and published a discredited “study” on the DNA of the Greeks. To be precise, the discredited study was that of Jews and Palestinians…the Greek study is discredited by proxy for similar reasons. The study using alchemical methods and unscientific manipulation of three people’s DNA has attempted to “prove” the “racial inferiority” of the Greek race. It makes the Greeks descendants of some Eastern Africans, the Japanese of some Western Africans and Turks Europeans! The latter has caused my two friends Okan and Hussein, a Yörük (believe me, he looks Yörük), both Turkish officers to question the sanity of the “scientists.”
[...]When we took leave of our hosts at Jalova, we had little idea that, as we shook hands in confident farewell, it was to be the last for a long time to come. The Dacia set course for Athens. We entered the port of Peiraeus to the sound of deafening noise. Everything was beflagged and festive. The ships' sirens whistled. Sailors, lining the decks of the ships, waved their caps, and a boisterous crowd had swarmed onto the quays.
Under a brilliant sky, the pile of the Parthenon stood out even more brightly, as though lifted on invisible wings. In this setting, the most beautiful in the world, where so much joie de vivre and such an overflow of happiness welcomed us, I felt the approach of disaster on the rebound. Has not the sense of tragedy always been near to emotion stirred by the sight of beauty, in this region where the Gods dwelt? Forsaking the traditional formulae of diplomacy, I tried to express my forebodings in my reply to President Metaxas' speech of welcome.
